Dragon age: Terminus zine

A zine about endings

The project is currently in it's creation phase

About

A faint light flickers out over the lands of Thedas, casting a final twinkle in the eyes of our heroes. They know that things cannot stay the same, but as that flame extinguishes, one last prayer in their heart pleads for this moment to last just a second longer.
+
As new tales begin, we want to explore the theme of endings within the Dragon Age franchise. A collection of artwork, poems and stories looking at the bitter and the sweet final chapters of events and characters from across the series.
We are open to exploring both canon and non-canon endings, a mixture of positive and negative, including potential character deaths. This may allow opportunities for people to include their own Wardens/Hawkes/Inquisitors, but we will be focusing on canon characters within the franchise. This is a for-charity zine, and though we have not selected the specific charity at this point, it will be one that acts in support of Palestine. As part of the merch for this zine, we will be creating a small series of tarot cards. This zine has a zero tolerance policy for generative AI content, any artists or writers found to be using it will be removed from the project as a breach of our terms. Please click here to join our mailing list, and get updated as soon as our contributor apps open!

Artist Specs

We are looking for a range of artists able to create works to the theme of endings. The main focus of the characters we want to include will be those from within the main three games (Origins, 2, Inquisition), but can also include characters from the expanded canon (short stories, movies, tv series, etc). We are also open to the inclusion of MCs from each of the games, but they should not be the focus of the piece.Endings can be both canonical endings, or entirely fictitious, but there is also room for "what if" scenarios. We ask during your pitches that you use tone indicators for your piece, these can be words like, sad, happy, bittersweet, hopeful, warm, hopeless, dark, etc your pitches should also assume some finality, but do not always have to end in death. How will artists be selected?
We will be picking artists based on the examples you provide of your style, in combination the pitches you submit. It is not necessary, but would be helpful if you provide at least one example work where you have previously drawn the character you wish to use for at least one of your pitches so we can get an idea of how you handle them.
We will be accepting artists based on one of their pitches and expect them to continue with that character/idea so as to avoid overlap within the book (we want to include a wide range of characters, and not just several artists depicting endings for four or five fan favourite characters). What is a "What If" scenario?
These are ideas which stem from the butterfly effect. Rethinking the events of a story but with one detail adjusted to see how it changes the course of events. Not necessarily events which are decisions within the game (e.g. whether The Iron Bull saves the Chargers or not), but rather things beyond what happens in-game. For example, what if Hawke had taken on the role of Inquisitor? Or, what if Cullen had been a Grey Warden instead of a Templar?
Applications are open for people to create a single page illustration OR comic, a double page spread, or a multi-page comic. The final book will be A5 in size and be produced for both digital and print distribution. If you have any other questions before applying, feel free to reach out.

We are also accepting works such as poetry, conversation snippets and codex entries (in the form of letters, notes, scraps of paper, graffiti etc found around Thedas). In the case of codex entries, if it's something you're interested in, we would love you to include one example of writing in that style, and would also like to know if you would feel comfortable submitting multiple pieces if applicable.

Merch Specs

We will be taking on a limited number of merch artists to support the project with beautiful physical merchandise. We are most interested in people who have experience creating merchandise who are familiar with how manufacturers typically require their files to be handled, therefore we ask for examples of merch you have previously had produced for your own business, other zines, etc If you do not have examples of this, you can also show us merch you have designed which has not been printed to give us an idea of your style. What merch themes are we interested in?
The overarching theme of the zine is endings, and the book is predominantly character focused, with a companion tarot deck which references the style of the Dragon Age Official tarot. Therefore, with physical merch, we want to hear ideas which compliment these themes and ideas. Keep in mind there should be a range of emotions connected to endings, this shouldn't be doom and gloom, but also show hope and happiness.
How will tarot artists be picked?
We have split the merch apps into two parts, one for general merch and one for tarot, there is more detail below on tarot cards, but we are looking for very skilled artists, able to reproduce art in a style referential to the Dragon Age official tarot cards, therefore it is important you can show at least one piece that demonstrates your understanding of that style. After that we will be deciding artists on their pitches and following selection will be working with them to create a spread of cards which have no overlap in characters or card type. Tarot artists will be considered a sub-team within the zine and expected to work parallel to one another. Please only indicate interest in the tarot side of the project if you are willing and able to dedicate time to it.
TarotAs part of this project, we want to create a limited selection of tarot cards featuring characters from the franchise, following the theme of endings. We are accepting merch artists who wish to create 1-3 cards each. If accepted as a tarot artist, they will not be asked to create any other work for the project to ensure they can focus their efforts. We are open to artists creating as many as three cards in order to ensure consistency of style, but so as not to overload any one person.Card designs must be new pieces of work, and though follow the dragon age tarot style, should not copy or use any of the artwork from the original card set. They will be created to the size of a standard tarot deck.
